Empowered by Accessibility, My Kent State Story

Transitioning to college comes with a mix of emotions, especially when facing it with a visual impairment. Leaving behind family and familiar surroundings to broaden horizons and achieve greater independence is both daunting and exhilarating. Yet, finding support, like what I experienced at Kent State University's Student Accessibility Services (SAS), makes the entire process so much easier.

When I discovered SAS, it significantly impacted my college preparation. Their offer of early move-in allowed me to settle into my dorm comfortably, strategically located near essential spots like the bathroom and laundry room, well before the campus buzz began.

Getting from my dorm to classes is easy because of SAS's partnership with the Portage Area Regional Transit Authority (PARTA). Their minibus service would take and pick me up for class. My daily bus schedule ensured I could get around without worries.

The Accommodations Letter SAS provided was invaluable. With it, I confidently approached my professors to discuss accommodations tailored to my needs. Every professor at Kent State University showed remarkable understanding and support, creating an environment where I could excel.

Navigating college with a visual impairment has its challenges, but with Kent State’s SAS by my side, it became a journey of endless possibilities.
